PRESS ROOM < Press Room Indiana AFL-CIO makes 2024 endorsements June 10, 2024 Contact: sgarnier@inaflcio.org INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.— The Indiana AFL-CIO is proud to announce our endorsements for the 2024 General Election. These endorsements are based on voting records and questionnaire responses issued to all candidates. Affiliates of the Indiana AFL-CIO reviewed this information and voted for the candidates they think best embody the labor movement’s values. “The working families of Indiana deserve candidates up and down the ballot that will fight for them at every turn,” said Indiana AFL-CIO President Brett Voorhies. “After careful deliberation by our affiliates, we believe these individuals will uphold our values when in office, and aggressively work towards legislation that is pro-worker.” The Indiana AFL-CIO makes endorsements for state and federal candidates. These endorsements and recommendations are voted on by the statewide Committee on Political Education (COPE), made up of representatives from all affiliated unions, statewide councils and regional AFL-CIO organizations. This ensures that the full diversity of the labor movement and regional diversity of Indiana is reflected in the process. The Indiana AFL-CIO seeks to educate, engage and mobilize the more than three hundred thousand union families on issues, candidates and policies that protect and support working Hoosiers. With members in all areas of the state, the Indiana AFL-CIO uses member-to-member contact at the worksite or home, direct mail, social media, rallies and public events to ensure working families receive information crucial to making decisions concerning elections and laws that affect their everyday lives. - IDP congratulates Jennifer McCormick on ballot petition submissions | Jennifer McCormick for Governor
INDIANAPOLIS—Today, Indiana’s last elected superintendent of public instruction Jennifer McCormick submitted the necessary signatures to qualify for the May Democratic Primary ballot for Governor. PRESS ROOM McCormick gathered over 9,000 signatures, more than doubling the number needed to make the ballot across the state and in many of Indiana’s nine congressional districts. “Jennifer McCormick is gaining popularity and momentum across Indiana, and her signature campaign is direct proof,” said Indiana Democratic Party Chair Mike Schmuhl. “Hoosiers know our next governor should be focused on taking on special interests, raising teacher pay at local schools, expanding childcare opportunities, protecting personal freedoms, and supporting Indiana’s rural hospitals.” “After 20 years of Republican administrations, it's clear that one-party rule is limiting Indiana’s potential. We need leadership that listens to Hoosiers and protects their rights. Instead, Republicans have stripped away the right to choose and refused to give Hoosiers a direct voice at the ballot box on critical issues like our neighbors. As governor, Jennifer will listen to Hoosiers, restore reproductive rights, and bring much-needed balance to our state government.” “Our party is united behind her, and ready for 2024, while the Republican gubernatorial candidates begin their primary race to the bottom and collectively spend millions to persuade Hoosiers.” With today’s submissions, McCormick now becomes the only Democratic gubernatorial candidate to qualify for the primary ballot. - Commonsense Abortion Rights Plan | Jennifer McCormick for Governor
Fact Sheet: McCormick Commonsense Abortion Rights Plan The McCormick-Goodin Commonsense Abortion Rights Plan will protect abortion rights for Hoosiers, even in the absence of legislative action. Acknowledging the legislative hurdles, McCormick outlined several executive actions that can be taken to protect reproductive rights and access in Indiana: Direct the Indiana Department of Health to interpret existing laws in a way that maximizes legal access to abortion services. By clarifying regulations, McCormick will work to reduce barriers that clinics and providers face. Reproductive health funding will be prioritized in the state budget to provide reproductive health services — not anti-abortion advocacy. Shift focus from enforcement to compliance assistance for clinics and providers, creating a more supportive regulatory environment. Appoint abortion rights supporters to relevant state boards and commissions, including the Medical Licensing Board, to ensure the state's policy implementation aligns with trusting women and healthcare providers. Fight to protect the privacy of Hoosiers’ medical records from prying government officials, including terminated pregnancy reports. Use the governor’s office as a platform to defend abortion rights and inform Hoosiers of their reproductive freedoms. Additionally, McCormick will push for legislative change to create citizen-led ballot initiatives to allow the people to repeal Indiana’s extreme abortion ban directly. - Healthcare | Jennifer McCormick for Governor
All Hoosiers deserve access to affordable healthcare delivered by quality providers at all stages of life, regardless of ZIP code. Healthcare < Issues When Hoosiers are healthy, they succeed in the classroom, at work, and at home. From our very youngest Hoosiers to those who are living out their golden senior years, Hoosiers must have access to an affordable, robust healthcare and public health system to achieve positive health outcomes through prevention, education, and access to care. We will address the monopolization of hospital systems in Indiana by continuing to fight for competition by establishing an environment to grow independent hospitals, promote incentives and protections for health care provider recruitment and retention, and provide for more professional autonomy in practices. We, I will explore all measures to continue to lower prescription costs. We will prioritize statewide access to affordable and quality mental health services and addiction care, promoting the safety and wellbeing of Hoosiers. We will expand Hoosiers’ Right to Try regarding their own healthcare by eliminating barriers and providing timely education to Hoosiers with serious or immediately life-threatening conditions. We will fight for all Hoosiers to make their own healthcare decisions, including reproductive rights and freedoms, embracing IVF and access to contraception. We will work to provide state-wide access to maternal health services addressing our state’s 25 counties deemed “maternity care deserts” while understanding 30% of our counties are without an OB-GYN. We will work to lower Indiana’s infant mortality rate by better connecting mothers and families to accessible care and education. We will audit and address the issues plaguing Indiana’s Family and Social Services Administration’s (FSSA) operations and advance services to Hoosiers. We cannot repeat the Medicaid shortfall issue our families are facing and continue to have state agencies operate in silos. We will support the development of a legal, well-regulated cannabis market. Legalizing medical marijuana would be the first step and carries the benefit of providing doctors one more option for treating suffering patients. We will champion organ and tissue donation by establishing a better support system for living donors along with supporting statewide education programs regarding organ and tissue donation. We will promote policies that protect our wetlands, water, air, soil, recreational forests, and wildlife and fight against policies that result in their devastation, leading to unhealthy Hoosiers and communities. We will prioritize preventive programs addressing Indiana’s top health issues such as obesity, smoking, and other chronic diseases. These conditions are preventable and treatable, but continuing to ignore them will only increase healthcare expenditures, contribute to maternal mortality rates, and perpetuate family cycles of unhealthy lifestyles. We will work with local officials to sustain their local healthcare facilities and health care providers, directing attention to our underserved communities by promoting projects that support the creation and expansion of health centers and recruiting healthcare providers to areas in need of services. We will make it a priority to fully fund Medicaid and the Health First Indiana Program to ensure our public health system is positioned to serve Hoosiers today and tomorrow. We will prioritize education surrounding vaccination and immunizations by working across state agencies to launch an aggressive campaign.

- Protecting Democracy | Jennifer McCormick for Governor
All Hoosiers deserve a leader with integrity who will uphold the Constitution and protect our democracy. Protecting Democracy < Issues Indiana, along with the rest of the country, faces a critical moment in the great experiment of democracy. It is up to us, as a community of informed and engaged Hoosiers, to confront these threats and collectively fight the forces working to restrict our voices. We will empower and embrace the voice of the people. I will work tirelessly to expand opportunities for voter registration and increased voter access to the polls. We will also lead the charge to introduce citizen-led ballot initiatives as another way for Hoosier voices to be heard. We will enhance civic education in our K-12 system and will introduce pre-registration programs for 16- and 17-year-old students, so they are ready to undertake their duties as citizens once they are able. We will fight against gerrymandering by developing a nonpartisan redistricting commission, increase opportunities for public input, and appoint Indiana Supreme Court justices who respect an inclusive and transparent redistricting process. We will govern, including working with the Office of Inspector General, with the highest standards of transparency and accountability to inspire Hoosier confidence in their government.
