- Jennifer McCormick releases McCormick-Goodin Commonsense Utility Affordability Plan to lower Hoosier utility bills | Jennifer McCormick for Governor
PRESS ROOM < Press Room Jennifer McCormick releases McCormick-Goodin Commonsense Utility Affordability Plan to lower Hoosier utility bills September 19, 2024 Contact: Kelly Wittman, (317) 450-5711 McCormick for Governor press@mccormickforgov.com NEW CASTLE, Ind.— Today, Indiana gubernatorial nominee Jennifer McCormick announced her Commonsense Utility Affordability Plan to address rising utility costs hurting Hoosiers across the state. “Indiana families are struggling with soaring utility bills while utility monopolies continue to use ratepayer dollars to influence policy in their favor,” said McCormick. “Our plan restores balance by prioritizing Hoosiers over utilities and will bring fairness back to our utility system.” The McCormick-Goodin Commonsense Utility Affordability Plan focuses on four key reforms to lower utility bills and protect consumers: Restoring Net Metering: The plan will reinstate net metering in Indiana, allowing Hoosiers to sell electricity back to the grid at the same rate they purchase energy from it. This change will foster competition, reduce utility costs, increase energy generation, and encourage the adoption of renewable energy. Prohibiting Misuse of Ratepayer Dollars: The plan will ban utilities from using ratepayer dollars for lobbying, advertising, trade association dues, and political contributions. This will ensure that utility companies can no longer use funds meant for services to increase their profits at the expense of consumers. Prioritizing Ratepayer Advocates in the IURC: McCormick-Goodin will appoint leaders to the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC) who are committed to advocating for ratepayers, ensuring that the commission operates to apply the same competitive pressure that would exist if utilities were not statutorily protected monopolies. Lowering Utility Bills by Investing in Energy Efficiency: The McCormick-Goodin administration will reinstate Mitch Daniels’ era Energizing Indiana energy efficiency program to reduce energy consumption and lower Hoosiers‘ monthly energy bills. “We’re putting Hoosiers first by restoring fairness and transparency to our utility system,” added McCormick. “It’s time to stand up to the monopolistic utilities and ensure every Hoosier can afford their electricity bills.” ### About Jennifer McCormick: Jennifer McCormick is a lifelong educator and fifth-generation Hoosier from New Castle, Indiana. She has spent decades serving Indiana as a teacher, principal, and most recently, state superintendent of public instruction. While superintendent in rural Indiana, Jennifer fought to protect local control of school districts to ensure parents, teachers, and administrators could make the best decisions for their children. As state superintendent, she was a powerful advocate for teachers and students, ensuring they had the resources they needed to succeed while protecting taxpayer dollars by demanding transparency and fiscal accountability. Jennifer believes it's time we elect a public servant leader who empowers Hoosier voices so that together, we can make Indiana an attractive state in which to live, work, and thrive. About Terry Goodin: Terry Goodin most recently served as the State Director for Rural Development with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), a role that exemplified his commitment to improving the lives of rural Hoosiers. Prior to his work with the USDA, Terry served as a public school educator. His administrative endeavors began as an assistant principal and teacher at Austin High School, followed by serving as assistant principal with Bloomington High School South. As a member of the Indiana General Assembly, Terry committed his time to creating better opportunities for Indiana through educational, agricultural, and rural development initiatives and was a staunch advocate for the expansion of Broadband connectivity. Fact Sheet: McCormick-Goodin Commonsense Utility Affordability Plan The McCormick-Goodin Commonsense Utility Affordability Plan will provide utility bill relief by restoring net metering to Indiana, prohibiting misuse of ratepayer dollars, and prioritizing ratepayer advocates at the IURC. The plan also calls for restoring the Daniels’ era Energizing Indiana energy efficiency goals to lower energy consumption and reduce energy bills for Hoosiers. The McCormick-Goodin Commonsense Utility Affordability Plan has four mechanisms to provide significant relief for Hoosiers: Restoring Net Metering: The plan will reinstate net metering in Indiana, allowing Hoosiers to sell electricity back to the grid at the same rate they purchase energy from it. This change will foster competition, reduce utility costs, increase energy generation, and encourage the adoption of renewable energy. Mike Braun voted to eliminate net metering. - Statement on Indiana Supreme Court decision | Jennifer McCormick for Governor
PRESS ROOM “Today’s Indiana Supreme Court decision, reinstating the supermajority’s abortion ban passed in a rushed special session nearly a year ago, means women in our state are left without the freedom to make their own health care decisions. Hoosier doctors and nurses are forced to decide quickly what it means to save a woman's life or face going to jail. The Supreme Court’s refusal to recognize a right to bodily autonomy in our state’s constitution is a danger to our women and girls and makes it more difficult for Indiana to succeed. Hoosier families and businesses expect a state where basic access to health care is protected—not criminalized—and where the lives of women and girls aren't put in danger because of a divisive political agenda. “The time has come to let the people decide. I am calling on our Indiana legislature to pass a constitutional amendment giving Hoosier voters the right to a ballot initiative or referendum process. Indiana is in the minority of states that don‘t allow for this right. Questions of such magnitude should be decided directly by the people of Indiana. Our gerrymandered legislature does not represent the will of the people, and it's time for the people to have a voice.” “As governor, I’ll continue to fight for every option to return the protections that Indiana women had for 50 years under Roe v. Wade—whether that’s legislation, a constitutional amendment, or a referendum process that gives people a voice on this critical issue.” INDIANAPOLIS—Jennifer McCormick, Democratic candidate for Indiana governor, released the following statement in response to today’s decision by the Indiana Supreme Court. - Jennifer McCormick releases McCormick-Goodin Commonsense Education Plan | Jennifer McCormick for Governor
PRESS ROOM Former Republican Superintendent of Public Instruction and 2024 Democratic Gubernatorial Nominee Jennifer McCormick releases McCormick-Goodin Commonsense Education Plan Would hold all schools accountable to the same standards, increase teacher salaries < Press Room Former Republican Superintendent of Public Instruction and 2024 Democratic Gubernatorial Nominee Jennifer McCormick releases McCormick-Goodin Commonsense Education Plan Would hold all schools accountable to the same standards, increase teacher salaries August 29, 2024 Contact: Kelly Wittman, (317) 450-5711 McCormick for Governor press@mccormickforgov.com NEW CASTLE, Ind.— Today, Indiana gubernatorial nominee Jennifer McCormick released the McCormick-Goodin Commonsense Education Plan to increase school accountability and academic freedom, ensure academic rigor, and prioritize an education system that empowers Hoosier students to achieve their best results regardless of individual pursuits. “As Indiana’s last elected Superintendent of Public Instruction, I understand the educational realities of today and the future: Hoosiers do not need politicians in their schools,” said Jennifer McCormick. “Respecting, empowering, and paying our educators to ensure academic freedom, holding all schools accountable, working with parents and our communities, and focusing on what is best for kids is prioritizing, not politicizing, education.” The McCormick-Goodin Commonsense Education Plan focuses on creating solid beginnings for Hoosier kids, increasing academic freedom and rigor in the classroom, holding all schools accountable, and prioritizing a world-class education program for Hoosier students. The plan will establish a streamlined, consistent accountability platform for all schools accepting public dollars to educate Hoosier children. The plan will also ensure curricular, instructional, and assessment decisions are made responsibly and according to what is best for our students. “At a time when 90% of our students attend public schools, Indiana has sent over $1.6 billion away from public schools and to private schools in the form of vouchers,” said McCormick. “It’s common sense to ensure these schools are held accountable to the same academic and fiscal standards as public schools.” Jennifer McCormick is the Democratic Nominee for Governor. She was elected Indiana’s Superintendent of Public Instruction as a Republican in 2016. She is a career educator, spending decades serving as a teacher, principal, and rural school superintendent. Her running mate, Terry Goodin, was a teacher, assistant principal, and public school superintendent at Crothersville Community Schools. With two career educators, the McCormick-Goodin administration will ensure that Indiana’s education system has professional teachers who equip their students to pursue their dreams by enrolling in colleges and universities, securing good-paying, skilled jobs, or joining the military. “It’s time to stop experimenting with education, let teachers teach, pay them well, and allow students to succeed,” said Jennifer McCormick. “Our goal is an education system with professional teachers and accountable schools that sets students up for success, whether that means going to college, entering the skilled workforce, or joining the military.” ### Fact Sheet: McCormick-Goodin Commonsense Education Plan The McCormick-Goodin Commonsense Education Plan focuses on creating solid beginnings for Hoosier kids, increasing academic freedom and rigor in the classroom, holding all schools accountable, and prioritizing a world-class education program for Hoosier students. The plan will establish a streamlined, consistent accountability platform for all schools accepting public dollars to educate Hoosier children. The plan will also ensure curricular, instructional, and assessment decisions are made responsibly and according to what is best for our students. The McCormick-Goodin Commonsense Education Plan has five elements to provide Hoosiers access to a fully funded, world-class education: Strong Beginnings: As career educators, Jennifer McCormick and Terry Goodin recognize the education continuum and will prioritize Indiana’s investment in all levels of the educational journey. The McCormick-Goodin Commonsense Education Plan will expand quality and affordable childcare to address Indiana's childcare deserts. In addition, the plan will continue expanding access to PreK education until Indiana has universal PreK. Hold ALL Schools Accountable: The McCormick-Goodin Commonsense Education Plan will protect the rights of students and parents by establishing a streamlined and transparent accountability platform to hold all schools to the same academic and fiscal standards. Let Teachers Teach and Pay Them Like Professionals: As former teachers, Jennifer McCormick and Terry Goodin will champion our K-12 and post-high school instructors by implementing policies to recruit and retain the best and brightest educators. We will fight for a minimum base salary of $60,000 for Indiana teachers and adjust veteran teacher salaries to reflect their non-educator peers. We will uphold teacher rights by protecting the freedom of teacher unions to bargain for wages and benefits. In addition, mandates placed on educators and school boards will be reviewed and, where unnecessary or burdensome, eliminated. Rigorous and Comprehensive Curriculum: The McCormick-Goodin Commonsense Education Plan will call for autonomy at the local level to design a curriculum that prepares students for the future they choose. Academic freedom includes keeping politicians from deciding what books children can read. We will ensure our K-12 system plays an advanced role in career counseling by identifying and funding qualified personnel and the resources necessary to make our programs robust and effective across the state. Post-High School Education Attainment: The McCormick-Goodin Commonsense Education Plan will celebrate, champion, protect, and better fund our higher education institutions and direct workforce development training programs. The plan will protect university tenure and respect the distinction of the skilled trades’ apprenticeships and certifications. The McCormick-Goodin plan will re-establish a statewide emphasis on attaining post-high school education. PRESS ROOM Jennifer McCormick Releases McCormick-Goodin Commonsense Abortion Rights Plan McCormick: “This election is a referendum on abortion rights in Indiana.” < Press Room Jennifer McCormick Releases McCormick-Goodin Commonsense Abortion Rights Plan McCormick: “This election is a referendum on abortion rights in Indiana.” October 10, 2024 Contact: Mila Myles, (812) 240-3938 McCormick for Governor press@mccormickforgov.com NEW CASTLE, Ind.— Today, Indiana Democratic gubernatorial nominee Jennifer McCormick reaffirmed her commitment to restoring the rights and freedoms women relied on for 50 years under Roe v. Wade. As Governor, McCormick will fight to ensure that women have the right to an abortion. This standard was long the law of the land before the recent rollback of reproductive rights. "This election is a referendum on abortion rights in Indiana," McCormick said. "I trust women and their healthcare providers to make the best decisions for their health, and it's time we bring common sense and balance back to our state policies." Acknowledging the legislative hurdles, McCormick outlined several executive actions that can be taken to protect reproductive rights and access in Indiana: Direct the Indiana Department of Health to interpret existing laws in a way that maximizes legal access to abortion services. By clarifying regulations, McCormick will work to reduce barriers that clinics and providers face. Reproductive health funding will be prioritized in the state budget to provide reproductive health services — not anti-abortion advocacy. Shift focus from enforcement to compliance assistance for clinics and providers, creating a more supportive regulatory environment. Appoint abortion rights supporters to relevant state boards and commissions, including the Medical Licensing Board, to ensure the state's policy implementation aligns with trusting women and healthcare providers. Fight to protect the privacy of Hoosiers’ medical records from prying government officials, including terminated pregnancy reports. Use the governor’s office as a platform to defend abortion rights and inform Hoosiers of their reproductive freedoms. Additionally, McCormick will push for legislative change to create citizen-led ballot initiatives to allow the people to repeal Indiana’s extreme abortion ban directly. McCormick’s opponents, Mike Braun and Micah Beckwith, support an extreme abortion ban with no exceptions. Their even more extreme ban, if enacted, would prohibit all abortions, even in cases of rape, incest, or when the mother's life is at risk. "The choice in this election is clear," McCormick emphasized. "When I’m elected Governor, the people of Indiana will have spoken loudly and clearly in favor of abortion rights." Jennifer McCormick’s campaign is focused on restoring balance and common sense to Indiana’s government, and protecting women's rights is at the heart of that mission. ### Fact Sheet: McCormick Commonsense Abortion Rights Plan The McCormick-Goodin Commonsense Abortion Rights Plan will protect abortion rights for Hoosiers, even in the absence of legislative action. - About | Jennifer McCormick for Governor
Growing up on a small family farm in New Castle, Indiana, Jennifer witnessed the opportunities and challenges facing Indiana. Her community was full of spirit and support, and the public school was the community’s front porch. Neighborhoods were filled with kids, and families had an opportunity to thrive. Yet, as high-paying jobs left her community, she saw families, small businesses, schools, and local infrastructure suffer. It was during these times that Jennifer also witnessed the resilience of Hoosiers. Her dad, an engineer by trade, and her mom, a retail store manager, instilled in Jennifer the importance of public service, empowering others, and excellence in hard work. It became evident that true public service required an approach of bringing all voices to the table, respecting others and ensuring no one was left behind. Jennifer and her husband, Trent, have one son, a West Point graduate and a member of the United States Army. She earned her B.A. from Purdue, M.A. from Ball State and an Ed.S. and Ph.D. from Indiana State. Jennifer McCormick is a lifelong educator and Indiana native committed to building a state where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. 44th Superintendent of Public Instruction Proud military mom Proven leader for Governor Pledging to put Hoosiers first ABOUT JENNIFER Proven Leader for Governor Proud military mom 44th Superintendent of Public Education Pledging to put Hoosiers first Jennifer’s journey and passion for service led her to the classroom where she spent a decade as a special education and language arts teacher before becoming a public school principal and Superintendent for nearly 8 years. Under her leadership, Yorktown Community Schools received national recognition for their academic performance and quality extracurricular opportunities. In 2016, Jennifer successfully ran for State Superintendent of Public Instruction to be a champion for Hoosier kids. She campaigned on empowering students, parents and educators, supporting and guiding schools, and delivering a high-quality public education to every child. As the last elected State Superintendent, she took on politics that were negatively impacting our schools and fought for what was right for kids, teachers, and parents. She protected local control of school districts so that communities could make the best decisions for their own children. Jennifer demonstrated fiscal responsibility by using taxpayer dollars effectively and efficiently while managing over half of Indiana’s state budget. Jennifer’s running for governor of Indiana because she’s tired of the supermajority’s focus on fringe issues that have nothing to do with the challenges everyday Hoosiers are facing. It’s time to stand up to elect a leader that puts Hoosiers first. She will bring common sense and bipartisanship back to the statehouse. Jennifer will stand up to policies that are dismantling public education, stripping Hoosiers of their rights and freedoms, and leaving rural communities behind.
